Antifona je autorovou reakcí na vlastní snímek Arnulf Rainer, který vznikl o více než 50 let dříve. Autor se ke svému dílu vrací a vytváří „re-make“ v pravém slova smyslu. Světlo je obráceno do tmy, z hluku se stává ticho, a naopak. Rytmus je otočen. Antifona je protipólem, synergickým doplněním, překřížením. „Své životní dílo jsem chtěl zakončit poctou filmu, která se bude držet dál od digitální kultury. Chtěl jsem pryč od obrazů, které znázorňují – také od barvy, protože i tu chápu jako formu znázornění,“ dodává sám Peter Kubelka.

Antiphon is the author’s response to his own film Arnulf Rainer, created over 50 years earlier. The author returns to his own work and creates a “remake” in the true sense of the word. Light is changed into darkness, noise becomes silence, and vice versa. Rhythm is turned around. Antiphon is a counter-pole, an interchange. “I wanted to nish my work with an homage to film-making, keeping a distance from digital culture. I wanted to abandon images that depict – also color, because I understand it to be a form of depiction,” adds Peter Kubelka himself.

Narodil se v roce 1934 ve Vídni. Studoval filmovou režii na Akademii múzických umění ve Vídni a na Centro di Cinematogra a v Římě. V polovině 50. let navázal kontakty s výtvarnými umělci a filmaři, kteří se pohybovali v okruhu ne gurativní a nenarativní tvorby. Svými ranými filmy se řadí mezi průkopníky Vídeňské školy formálního filmu. Od 60. let je jeho tvorba kladně přijímána také ve Spojených státech amerických, kde realizoval několik cyklů přednášek. Spoluzaložil Rakouské filmové muzeum, přispěl ke vzniku Anthology Film Archives v New Yorku a koncipoval sbírku avantgardního filmu v Centre Georges Pompidou. V posledních desetiletích se věnuje pedagogické činnosti, hudební produkci a vaření. Od roku 1980 je profesorem na Akademii umění ve Frankfurtu nad Mohanem.

He was born in 1934 in Vienna. He studied film direction at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and Centro di Cinematogra a in Rome. In the mid-fifties, he got in touch with artists and filmmakers who focused on non-gurative a non-narrative art forms. With his early films, he is considered a pioneer of the Viennese School of formal film. Since the sixties, his work has been positively accepted in the USA, where he gave several series of lectures. He co-founded The Austrian Film Museum, contributed to the founding of the Anthology Film Archives in New York and designed the collection of avant-garde film at Centre Georges Pompidou. In the last decades, he focuses on teaching activities, musical production and cooking. Since 1980, he has been professor at The Academy of Arts in Frankfurt am Main.
