Snímek Divotvorné oko spadá do Lehovcova umělecky úspěšného období konce 30. a počátku 40. let, kdy režisér systematicky inovuje žánr populárně-vědeckého filmu. V Divotvorném oku dochází formálně asi nejdále. Všetečná kamera zkoumá, jak zblízka vypadají běžné věci jako rýžový kartáč, padající kapky, lidské oko, vnitřek kapesních hodinek, zip, bublinky v sodovce nebo gramofon. Realita se proměňuje díky jinému úhlu pohledu. Divotvorné oko je nepochybnou poctou médiu filmu jako takového.

The Magic Eye was made during Lehovec’s artistically successful period at the end of the 30’s and 40’s, when the director had been systematically innovating the genre of popular science film. The Magic Eye formally gets the furthest. The inquisitive camera examines what everyday objects, such as a scrub brush, falling drops, the human eye, the inside of a pocket watch, a zipper, bubbles in soda water or a record player, look like from close up. Reality changes under the in fluence of a different point of view. The Magic Eye is indisputably an homage to the media of film itself.

Jiří Lehovec
Narodil se v roce 1909 v Praze a zemřel v roce 1995 tamtéž. Studoval elektrotechniku a dějiny umění. Podobně jako Alexander Hackenschmied se k filmu dostal přes psaní a fotografii, které se intenzivně věnoval až do konce 30. let. V polovině 30. let, během vojenské služby, začal působit jako kameraman ve Vojenském technickém ústavu. Poté pracoval v kulturním oddělení společnosti AB a během války v Baťových ateliérech ve Zlíně. Po válce se stal jedním ze zakladatelů, vedoucích a kmenových režisérů Krátkého filmu. Dokumentární filmy pro film i televizi natáčel až do 70. let. Byl také dlouholetým pedagogem na FAMU.

He was born in 1909 in Prague, where he passed in 1995. He studied electrical engineering and history of arts. Like Alexander Hackenschmied, he was brought to filmmaking by writing and photography, which he did intensively up to end of the 30’s. In the mid 30’s, when he was in military service, he started working as a film photographer at the Military Technical Institute. Later on, he worked in the cultural department AB and in the Baťa Studios in Zlín during wartime. Post war, he was one of the founders, leaders and key directors of Short film (Krátký film). He continued creating documentaries for film and television until the 70’s. He was also a teacher at FAMU (The Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague) for many years.
