Vávrův první samostatně režírovaný film bývá nazýván filmovou esejí. První část snímku předkládá poetický obraz ulic a zákoutí Prahy v její rozmanitosti – od rána do večera, od centra až po periferii, zaplněnou lidmi všech generací a mnoha profesí. V druhé části Vávra experimentuje s hranými pasážemi, v nichž využívá mimo jiné kompoziční a střihové postupy sovětské montážní školy a dalších škol avantgardního filmu (neobvyklé úhly kamery, rapidmontáž, vícenásobné expozice atd.).

Vávra’s last independently directed film is often called a film essay. The first part of the film depicts a poetic picture of streets and hidden corners of Prague and their diversity – from morning to evening, from the center to the suburbs, full of people of different generations and many professions. In the second part, Vávra experiments with feature sections, where he uses amongst others composition and editing techniques typical for the Soviet montage school and other avant-garde film (unusual camera angles, rapid montage, multiple expositions, etc.).

Otakar Vávra
Narodil se v roce 1911 v Hradci Králové a zemřel v roce 2011 v Praze. Během studií architektury v Brně se začal systematicky věnovat filmu. Vedle psaní kritik se brzy realizoval v autorské avantgardní lmové tvorbě, jeho nejznámější tituly jsou Světlo proniká tmou, Žijeme v Praze a Listopad. Paralelně začal pracovat jako scenárista v mainstreamové hrané tvorbě. Jako režisér hraných celovečerních filmů debutoval v roce 1936 a v tomto oboru brzy dosáhl uznání, mimo jiné díky precizní přípravě scénáře. Celovečerní filmy natáčel kontinuálně až do roku 1989. Nejoceňovanější období jeho tvorby spadá do 40. a 60. let 20. století, kdy byl příslušníky Nové vlny vnímán také jako důležitý pedagog na FAMU.

He was born in 1911 in Hradec Králové and passed away in 2011 in Prague. During his studies of architecture in Brno, he began to focus on film systematically. Besides writing reviews, he soon realized himself as an artist in avant-garde film work; his most famous films are Light Penetrates the Dark, We Live in Prague and Autumn. At the same time, he started working as a screenwriter in mainstream feature film production. He debuted as a feature film director in 1936 and soon became renowned in the field, particularly for precise script preparation. He kept shooting feature films until 1989. His work made in the 50’s and 60’s, when the members of the New Wave considered him to be an important teacher at FAMU (The Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague), is the most highly acclaimed.
